The Moto Z Play has been spotted yet again in leaked photos and benchmark listing. Expected to be an affordable variant of the Moto Z and Moto Z Force, the smartphone is also likely to retain their design and modular functionality.
Motorola has already announced the Moto Z and Moto Z Force smartphones with modular functionality at Lenovo’s Tech World 2016 event. While both are expected to go on sale sometime in September-October, there is one more smartphone, the Moto Z Play, which has been in the rumor mill for a long time. Expected to be the affordable variant in the Moto Z-series, the alleged Moto Z Play smartphone has surfaced on numerous occasions via leaked images and benchmark listings. Now, in the latest leak, two new photos have surfaced online, showing off the front panel, working camera app and the ‘About’ page from Settings Menu.
From the leaked photos we can see that the Moto Z Play shares the same design as the Moto Z and Moto Z Force. On the front, we can see the earpiece, camera module and LED flash above the display, and a square shaped fingerprint scanner below the display. The ‘About’ page from Settings Menu clearly shows the Moto Z Play name, and Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow OS. The second photo shows the working camera app with a much cleaner interface – HDR, Flash and Timer functions on top, switch camera, shutter and photo gallery icons at the bottom.

Someone also managed to run the smartphone through benchmarking website GFXBench, revealing its key specifications and features. Based on the listing, the Moto Z Play sports a 5.5-inch full HD (1080p) display. It is powered by Qualcomm’s 64-bit Snapdragon 625 octa-core chipset (eight Cortex A53 cores) clocked at 2.02GHz, paired with Adreno 506 GPU and 3GB of RAM. With 32GB onboard storage, there is no word on whether or not it is expandable. Previous reports also pointed to a variant with 2GB of RAM and 16GB onboard storage, so there could be multiple variants. In the camera department, a 16-megapixel rear snapper with LED flash, 4K video recording is expected, along with 5-megapixel selfie camera with LED flash. On the connectivity front, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, GPS and NFC are expected. With a 3,300mAh or 3,500mAh battery and Quick Charge feature, the Moto Z Play could run Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow at launch. An update to Android 7.0 Nougat could come is likely to be rolled out in the coming months.

The Moto Z Play is also expected to boast 16-pin connector at the back with Moto Mods support, similar to the Moto Z and Moto Z Force. With modular functionality, you could snap an additional battery, camera module with optical zoom functionality, a portable projector, speaker module and much more. At the Lenovo Tech World 2016, the company did show off a handful of Moto Mods such as the Incipico offGRID Power Pack, JBL Soundboost and InstaShare projector, with more to be announced later.
Motorola also unveiled the Moto Style Shells, which is nothing but snap-on covers to personalize your smartphone. They are made from a range of different materials such as fabric, real wood and genuine leather among others. While there is no word on launch date, pricing and availability, the Moto Z Play is rumored to be announced on September 6.
